Looking Back At The Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Let’s look back at how our month of October went by; October being the month for ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ globally we too took a direct dive into it. IFG works the whole year round for the cause of breast cancer and has been doing so since the year 2000. With the help of the experts and Dr. Rufina Soomro we have developed a mastectomy bra and light weight Prosthesis Pads in various sizes for the patients of mastectomy these pads and brads are made of light fabric which are suitable and ideal for our harsh climate.

This year we took a step forward and collaborated with numerous organizations and hospitals to help raise awareness. In Pakistan the chances for women to be diagnosed with breast cancer are extremely alarming this is due to lack of awareness and knowledge around the topic. Keeping in mind that not everyone has the privilege or access to information we expanded our horizons to reach to them and to provide them with proper knowledge and information we collaborated with Liaqat National Hospital and made a stop at Artistic Milliners where we conducted an awareness session with the female factory workers and employees.

Our next stop was at Karachi University where we encouraged men to attend the session too as there is a possibility for men to develop breast cancer too. Around 200 students attended this session and participated in the activity to write a message for the survivors of breast cancer on the wall of hope. As the session was organized by the Department of Psychology at this session we not only discussed the implications, risks and causes of the disease but also covered the psychological aspect of it.

We placed a wall of hope at Liaqat National Hospital and pledged to donate one prosthesis pad against every message shared on the wall. We received 500 messages from students and visitors.

We attended the breast cancer awareness seminar at Liaqat National and placed a tree where students and volunteers were encouraged to stick a pink flower on the tree to show solidarity with the survivors and patients of breast cancer.

Apart from this we collaborated with agha khan hospital, Engro, and Standard Chartered where we attended awareness sessions.

October felt like a plate half full but there is still a lot to be done, taking the pledge and working towards this cause we encourage you to help spread awareness and get yourself regularly checked!
